“The Black Stallion” at the New York Film Festival

NYFF17: Family Matinee of “The Black Stallion”
Posted by Jeffrey Bloomer on 2.17.2012

The quintessential tale of a boy and his horse, The Black Stallion screens Saturday at 11am in a special 50 Years of the New York Film Festival family matinee at the Walter Reade Theater.
Although now widely regarded as a classic, The Black Stallion came to NYFF in 1979 with an uncertain future; United Artists, its distributor, didn’t show much interest in it. But after it screened at the festival, positive notices started to roll in, and it went on to a leggy box office run and two Academy Award nominations (though, puzzlingly, not one for its spectacular cinematography). Roger Ebert named the film the best of 1980, and Pauline Kael wrote it was “proof that even children who have grown up with television and may never have been exposed to a good movie can respond to the real thing when they see it.”
Based on the first of a long series of books by Walter Farley, the film picturesquely chronicles the relationship between a boy and his iconic stallion, initially after they are shipwrecked on an island together and eventually on the racetrack. The simple story resonated profoundly enough to inspire a sequel, prequel, television adaptation and myriad imitators in the years that followed.
Come see a magnificent 35mm print this weekend, with tickets just $6 for kids (children 4-12 should be occupied by an adult). And don’t forget to check out our ongoing Family Films series, with daily screenings throughout the February school break and more titles coming soon.

“I was so obsessed with them that I would ofter pretend I had my own horse and I would ride him everywhere. That’s right…I didn’t have an imaginary friend…I had an imaginary horse!

I decided I would like to recreate those good old days by doing a reread of The Black Stallion series, and I also decided I wanted to spread that joy I felt when I was younger around to as many others as I could…. Read more

On the Road Again

We’re back on the Road with the literacy project. Just finished the Little Rock, Jonesboro, Bentonville, Feyetteville, and Ft. Smith shows and now on to Tucson. Whew …you know Alec and all the hardworking cowboys and cowgirls are getting a bit tired by now, good thing those horses keep ’em moving! Rolling along is a great place to be sometimes anyway. You might just leave a bit of that “not too important” stuff behind for awhile.

Monday May 2 we’ll be at Children’s Hospital in Tucson visiting some of the kids that can’t make the show the next day at 10:30 am. After all that wraps up we’ll head out to Phoenix for the Friday, May 6, 10:30 am show. We get a little break to watch the Kentucky Derby on May 7 while we drive all the way across country to Lexington, KY for the noon show on May 11 at the HorsePark.

After that everyone needs to head home for more events at Arabian Nights. The school year is coming to an end soon but you’d think it was already summer in Florida, it’s been ninety degrees everyday for a couple weeks already! It’ll be good to be home but always it’s a bit of a happy / sad feeling. Fun but tired … you know what I mean!?

Hope we see you here or there this year or soon. Write us a note anytime, just to say “Hi” and happy trails to you too!

Your friend,
Tim Farley

Polo event and auction at the Ocala Horse Park

The Florida Horse Park and The Black Stallion Literacy Foundation (BSLF) have partnered together to present Day at the Park 2011: One Story, Many Tails. The event is scheduled to take place Saturday, April 16, 2011 during the Ocala Horse Properties International CCI**/*3-Day Event.

Florida Agriculture Center and Horse Park was created by the Florida Legislature in 1996 in recognition of the fact that the horse industry was so much a part of Marion County’s identity. Because of generous donations made by Friends of the Park, The Florida Horse Park has been operating and developing since 2005. As a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, the Park relies on donations to fund its operations and development.

The Park offers an international caliber competition venue, an exciting schedule of world class and local events that are drawing top competitors and spectators from every equestrian discipline. Educational opportunities are a major component for the Horse Park and are offered for the seasoned competitor all the way to beginning horseman. This increasingly popular destination for family tourism offers visitors hundreds of miles of pristine riding trails that wind through the lush Florida Greenway.

The Black Stallion Literacy Foundation helps children discover the joys of reading and the excitement of learning through the wonders of live horses and the Black Stallion books by Walter Farley. BSLF is an innovative partnership of educators, businesses, volunteers, education foundations, and staff members focused on promoting literacy through the natural connection between children and horses.
