OOPs! Dang those buttons … sent out the letter without any pictures … so sorry. Thought the cyber world of blogs and email would be easy … just like I thought Roman Riding would be easy … try it again!
Many of you have asked about a book series titled “Phantom Stallion” and a writer named Terri Farley. “Is she related to Walter Farley?” NOT! Terri’s last name was Sprenger then became Tess Farraday to write romance, and then changed her name again when she started writing horse books. Her husband’s name is Farley but not that Farley! She isn’t part of the Black Stallion family but she loves her horses!

The Black Stallion Literacy Project
The Black Stallion Literacy Project keeps moving along. We just finished our ride across the southwest. Hope we had a chance to see ya’ll!
We’re still working with the Navajo on the reservations in Arizona. It’s been a honor to be out there and meet such wonderful people in that spectacular part of the world … even if it was a little cold! We saw some wild horses, too!
These are two of Baje Whitethorn Sr.’s drawings for the new “Little Black, a Pony” book!

First Graders from the central Florida participate in the “second touch” portion of their curriculum.
Students who participate in the program first meet horses when they receive their copy of Little Black, a Pony at their schools. The “first touch” experience includes a special appearance by the book’s main characters, Little Black and Big Red. Children are invited to pet the horses as they are given their own copy of Walter Farley’s classic children’s book.
The book and accompanying curriculum are part of a program to encourage reading early. After students finish reading, Little Black, a Pony, they have their “second touch” experience with horses.
After the students arrive they visit four learning stations in the stables that are designed to teach them about caring for horses. In 10-minute sessions, the students learn about equipment like saddles and bridles, horse shoeing, grooming and feeding.
The students also have time to read to a horse. This gives children who may be intimidated to read to an adult the chance to show off what they have learned about reading to someone they know will not criticize them. At the end of their time the students receive the second book in the first grade curriculum, Little Black Goes to the Circus.
